If its an established pond then I agree with Saph, but remember a new bulb doesn't work instantly it could take a week before any signs of improvement.

if you havent got some already
put some white filter wool matting in the third bay that way it will help catch the fines that can be created by dying algae

i say the third bay because of the way mine is set up (vortex with vortex brush, 15 red filter brushes, jap mat, filter wool top layer & flocur underneath and last bay just flocor) so the big waste is taken out before it gets to the filter wool, but it will have to be cleaned everyday if needed when first getting rid of dead algae
ive got the wool cleaning part of a routine when i water the plants whip the wool out of the filter spent five mins with the hose on it dunkit in a bucket of pond water to get rid of the chlorine and back in and you dont even have to turn the pump off to do it

As staph states you need to remove the 'dead' algae. Where it doesn't have a too detrimental effect on the water it will hamper the filtration process because of blockage. If you floss the water then it leaves it visible to any possible problems at a later date
